Project Award – Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Vertical Expansion
July 28, 2016
Bell recently won the contract to perform the Mechanical and Plumbing Scopes of Work for the expansion of Sentara Healthcare’s Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Due to the constrained footprint on this densely populated campus, the design for the expansion had to be vertical rather than horizontal. The solution? Six new floors on top of two existing wings, accomplished using a million-pound construction crane that is 200 feet tall and has a 300-foot boom. The project, which consists of approximately 180,000 SF of new construction, including a three-floor addition (two patient floors and one mechanical floor) on top of the Kaufman Pavilion and the addition of three patient floors with an expanded mechanical penthouse on top of the River Pavilion. The project also includes 188,000 SF of renovation in the existing hospital consisting of expanding and modernizing the 18 OR suites and the 54-bed ICU.
Project Award – United Therapeutics Phase 3 Net Zero Energy Headquarters
July 28, 2016
In early July Bell BCI, LLC was selected to perform the Mechanical and Plumbing component of United Therapeutics' 215,000 SF Headquarters expansion located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. This is an important win for Bell as we continue to strengthen our position as a leading “green” mechanical contractor in the Mid-Atlantic region. This is Phase Three of the project, which will culminate in an expanded HQ building, connection to the UT manufacturing facility, and parking, retail, and outdoor upgrades and finishes. When complete, this LEED Gold-certified headquarters building will operate on Net Zero Energy: the amount of electrical and thermal energy consumed will be renewably generated on-site throughout the course of the year. To achieve this ambitious goal, the tech-enriched facility will include various sustainable features including photovoltaic panels, geothermal wells, a high-performance electrochromic curtainwall, earth-coupled heating/cooling system, natural ventilation, daylight harvesting, and a thermal pool.
Project Award – Sagamore Spirit Distillery in Baltimore, MD
July 28, 2016
Bell is performing the Mechanical and Plumbing Scopes of Work on Sagamore Spirit's 22,000 SF Distillery Building and Processing Facility, both of which are located on the company's Baltimore, MD campus at Port Covington. Work on the Distillery is progressing quickly: On July 22nd, the 38 ft. tall American-made column still that will process their signature 83 proof Maryland Rye was lifted into place, marking a significant step toward completion of the facility, which is scheduled to open to the public in December of 2016. Work on the three story, 27,000 SF Processing facility, which includes a barreling and bottling area, a barrel aging room, a tasting room, and a retail area, is also underway. This is the second time Bell has been selected as the Mechanical and Plumbing contractor for the project owner.
Under Armour Project Apollo
May 6, 2016
In May of 2015, Bell BCI Company, LLC was selected to perform the $4.5 MM mechanical and plumbing component of Under Armour’s 173,000 SF Finance and IT office building project in Baltimore, MD. This fast-paced project required an innovative approach and a highly skilled team to complete the renovation and build-out of the former big box store within its tight six-month schedule. During the BIM process, our team created a model of the existing structure from 2D “as-built” drawings in an effort to coordinate new mechanical, plumbing, sheetmetal and electrical components. This model enabled us to identify areas of missing design and offer timely solutions to the design team, which helped keep the project moving on schedule. In addition, Bell prefabricated pipe assemblies off-site and shipped them to the site for expedited installation. Bell’s scope of work on this project included:
(2) Air cooled chillers totaling 450 Tons
(14) Air Handling Units totaling 140,000 cfm
(9) Ductless Split AC Units
HVAC Pumps, Fans, and associated equipment
The building, designed by architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, was completed on time and within budget. The facility features a 350-person auditorium; 29 conference rooms with audiovisual technology; IT help desk; open stairwells; collaborative workspaces, and double-height perimeter event spaces.
3K Chiller Plant
May 6, 2016
Bell BCI Company, LLC was the General Contractor on this $14.5 MM, 3,000 Ton Capacity Chiller Plant Upgrade at Fort Meade, MD. Bell performed structural and architectural additions, as well as removal and replacement of all major mechanical equipment; piping systems; electrical and control systems for the building’s Chilled and Condenser water systems. Bell’s scope of work included fabrication and installation of new piping for these systems, as well as installation of all mechanical equipment on this project. Early planning, careful coordination with our entire construction team, and our CAD Department’s use of BIM enabled us to modify our original project approach and increase our offsite fabrication. Our fab shop pre-assembled the piping components and timed deliveries to align with the construction and phasing schedules so prefabrications went directly from delivery to installation.
Major equipment installed included: 4,160V Outdoor Substation; 480V Indoor Switchgear; (3) 1500 Ton Chillers; (6) 750 Ton Cooling Towers; and (9) Hydronic Pumps Ranging in size from 75 to 500HP.
P-383 Controlled Industrial Facility
May 6, 2016
Bell performed the mechanical, plumbing and process piping scope of work for the construction of an approximately 50,000 square foot Controlled Industrial Facility (CIF) located in Portsmouth, VA. The newly completed CIF supports maintenance and repair services for Navy vessels. The facility incorporates specialized systems, equipment, materials, and construction designed to contain, handle, and process liquid waste. It also includes a Controlled Area (with a high bay work area and smaller rooms), a two-story administrative Support Area, and an Enclosed Storage Area (ESA). The Controlled Areas are built of specialized concrete construction and contain stainless steel tanks, equipment, and systems for processing liquid waste.
Construction Complete on Terremark Network Access Point (NAP) campus in Culpeper, VA
May 6, 2016
Bell BCI Company, LLC completed the Mechanical and Plumbing scope of work on a new secure data center and generator building for the Verizon – Terremark Network Access Point (NAP) campus located in Culpeper, VA. This 60,000 SF, high-capacity data center, which features multiple layers of redundancy for facility operations, networking, security, power and HVAC, meets Uptime Institute Tier-III Requirements. The new facility is designed with security features to help customers satisfy FISMA criteria and has a power capacity of 160 WPSF.
This project marks another successful mission-critical project for Bell in the Mid-Atlantic’s burgeoning Data Center industry. Hitt Contracting Inc. selected Bell from the area’s highly competitive mechanical contracting field, taking advantage of multiple value engineering initiatives to improve performance, reduce schedules, minimize cost, and mitigate risk. Bell’s extensive use of BIM enabled the construction team to meet Terremark’s aggressive schedule: the data center was commissioned and delivered in less than a year. Both Data Center D and the Generator Building were complete and open for business by the end of October 2015.
Maximizing the prefabrication of piping systems contributed to the successful on-time completion of this project. Equipment installed included (3) Chillers, (6) Dry-coolers, (1) Systecon Pump Package, (1) OAU, (1) ADU-1, (27) CRAC Units, (1) CUH, (2) Exhaust Fans, (4) Fuel oil storage tanks, (18) Unit Heaters, (5) Sump Pumps.
