Project Overview

Bell was awarded Construction Management Services by the Krog Corporation, a small business entity for the construction of GWSB II project.  The Construction Management Services included Bell’s NQA-1 procedures, our site specific safety programs, and experience management staff to assist Krog in the development and construction of the new facility.  Krog chose the Bell team largely for our extensive history at the Savannah River site and vast knowledge in the nuclear arena.

The GWSB No. 2 facility is a new below grade, vault structure utilized for storing radioactive glass canisters developed at the site’s vitrification processing plant.  This new vault structure required 12,000 cubic yards of heavy reinforced concrete and utilized 42,300 square feet of pre-cast concrete planks to create the storage area.

The storage area consisted of 2340 supports, fabricated at Bell’s fabrication facility for holding the new glass canisters. Egress for installing the glass canisters was through removable shield plugs, casted operating floor, to align with each support below. The superstructure consisted of structural steel framing, insulated wall panels and metal roofing. The facility was equipped with a large exhaust system along with fire protection and automatic controls.
