Project Overview

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Vertical Expansion

Bell has begun the Mechanical and Plumbing Scopes of Work on an extensive expansion of Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA for owner Sentara Healthcare. Due to the constrained footprint on a densely populated campus, the design for the expansion had to be vertical rather than horizontal. The solution? Six new floors on top of two existing wings, accomplished using a million-pound construction crane that is 200 feet tall and has a 300-foot boom. The project, which consists of  approximately 180,000 SF of new construction and 188,000 SF of renovation, includes a three-floor addition (two patient floors and one mechanical floor) on top of the Kaufman Pavilion and the addition of three patient floors with an expanded mechanical penthouse on top of the River Pavilion. New construction on the River Pavilion also includes a new public elevator tower to serve these new River Pavilion floors. Bell is also performing the Mechanical and Plumbing work on the renovation of portions of Levels 1,2,3,4 and 5.
