Project Overview

The United States Penitentiary (USP) Canaan is a high-security United States federal prison for male inmates, with a satellite prison camp for minimum-security male inmates. Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, Bell built this 650,000 square foot correctional facility as part of a design/build contract under which Bell provided all architectural, engineering, construction, project management, quality control and other related services.

The complex consists of several single-story buildings, a Federal Prisons Industries factory, six two-story general housing units and one two-story special housing unit within a secured compound, a security corridor that links all buildings within the secured perimeter, and seven 70-foot guard towers.

Bell was also responsible for the construction and commissioning of a medium-security Federal Prison Camp with living units and support facilities housing 128 inmates outside of the USP Canaan secured compound. The camp facility included a utility plant, Unicor warehouse, garage/landscape building, fueling station, and hazardous materials building.
