Project Overview

Bell performed the Mechanical and Plumbing scopes of work for the expansion of Sentara Healthcare’s Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA. The project, which consisted of approximately 180,000 SF of new construction, included a three-floor addition (two patient floors and one mechanical floor) on top of the Kaufman Pavilion and the addition of three patient floors with an expanded mechanical penthouse on top of the River Pavilion. The project also includes 188,000 SF of renovation in the existing hospital that entails expanding and modernizing 19 OR suites and the 54-bed ICU.

Due to the constrained footprint on this densely populated campus, the design for the expansion required a six-floor addition on top of two existing wings, accomplished using a 500-ton construction crane that was 200-foot tall and had a 300-foot boom.
