The recently completed Richmond Justice Center, constructed in Richmond Virginia, has been accredited with LEED Gold Certification. The Bell Company, working as a subcontractor for the Tompkins/Ballard/Davis Joint Venture, was responsible for all Mechanical and Plumbing design and construction. Working with our design partners at Wiley|Wilson, The Bell Company helped deliver an efficient and environmentally friendly facility.
The new 432,000 SF facility utilized some of the following design features that contributed to LEED Gold Certification:
-- Efficient plumbing systems that allow for redundant recirculation of domestic hot water
-- Energy-recovering air handling units with enthalpy wheels
-- 47% reduction in water use
-- 39.96% savings in energy costs
-- 95.13% of generated construction waste diverted from landfills
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. Created by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1999, LEED has become the international standard for green building performance. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. LEED certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy.
