Project Overview

Located at Birmgingham, AL, the 117th Air Refueling Wing is tasked with the aerial refueling with KC-135 Stratotankers.

Bell was responsible for the installation of a new Type III fueling system, instrumentation and controls, above-ground storage tanks, and taxiway/parking apron replacement with new underslab fueling pits.  The project initially consisted of seven construction phases.  Bell was able to coordinate with the Owner’s personnel and re-sequence the construction work to two phases.

This challenging heavy construction project consisted of apron demolition, major storm sewer relocation, 82,000 square-yards of new PCC aprons, and new taxiway extensions.

The project also included a complete hydrant refueling system with 8,000 linear-feet of underground 10-inch double-wall piping, apron hydrant pits, and a complete pump station with new above-ground 2,800 BBL storage tanks, containment structures and safety support equipment.
