Project Overview

Langley Air Force Base (AFB) Hospital Expansion and Renovation

Addition

This project was a 145,000 sq. ft., 43 bed, 5 operating room addition to the existing facility. The newly renovated hospitals main purpose is to support the increase of births in Military families in the Hampton Roads area.  Bell was responsible for all mechanical, plumbing and medical gas installations for the addition as well as renovation to the existing Central Utility Plant. Mechanical systems that included sanitary waste and vent, domestic water, storm drainage, medical air, lab air vacuum, oxygen anesthesia evacuation, steam and condensate, heating hot water, chilled water and condenser water.

Major Equipment included:

  • (11) Air-Handling Units ranging from 5,000 to 24,000 cfm.
  • (1) 585 ton Chiller
  • (2) 500 ton Cooling Towers
  • Medical Air Compressor, Medical Vacuum, Lab Air Compressor and WAGD Vacuum

Renovation

This Design/Build project reconfigures, right-sizes and modernizes the hospital to accommodate outpatient clinical, ancillary support and administrative functions thru various levels of renovation.

This project modernizes ancillary departments (i.e. pharmacy, lab and radiology) to meet current operational standards and to support the latest technologies and equipment and includes the complete renovation of approximately 160,000 sq. ft. of hospital space. Multi-phased construction adjacent to existing and functioning occupied health care spaces made this project especially challenging.

Mechanical renovations include two mechanical rooms, a complete ducted return air system, five roof top air handling units, and three ground level interior air handling units.
